The story
A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board claimed that ‘building a PC equal to the PS5 naturally costs ¥300,000–400,000 these days.’ Gaming PCs that used to be built for just ¥100,000-something now reportedly need at least ¥200,000 at the bare minimum, posters said, blaming rising prices for peripheral parts like SSDs and memory. Meanwhile, some noted that the PS5’s GPU performance is roughly on par with the older RTX 2060 class, while others raised concerns about the console’s future — including the lack of real ownership over downloaded games and the trend toward dropping optical drives. A few pushed back, arguing a PC could still be built for ¥100,000-something, but no one could agree on where the real price line falls.
What people said
Time to rethink your assumptions.
It's because it's built purely for gaming with zero unnecessary features.
Even comparing at the same raw specs, actual performance would differ by multiples.
It's not like a PC can only do gaming anyway.
PS5 being compared to an RTX 5090? Don't make me laugh lol
That's fine and all, but the point is it's no longer an era where you can build cheap.
No matter how weak the PS5's specs are, ¥200,000 minimum is just the going rate for PCs now.
The 5080 is still being sold, isn't it?
You can build an equivalent for ¥100,000.
¥100,000 is absolutely impossible right now.
Non-performance stuff like SSDs and memory has gotten way too expensive.
just like with movies, Sony could wipe them out on a whim.
The console's also been cracked, so future compatibility is shaky too,
and there's a real risk your whole game library
turns into garbage.
That's too scary to buy into —
Steam is way more trustworthy.
Do you seriously think Sony's downloaded versions are just a rental, unlike everyone else's?
Put another way, that just proves even the bare minimum needs ¥200,000.
Yeah, it's over.
But what if you could crack it and enjoy it for free…?
PCs have gotten so expensive that regular people just can't afford them anymore.
Consoles just have way too few games worth playing though.
No Steam.
No general-purpose versatility.
No appeal as a dedicated machine.
All that proves is how narrow your view is, how your thinking only draws on info that validates your own choice, and how oblivious you are to your own cognitive bias — and honestly, how dumb that is.
> No Steam
This one's clearly wrong.
Even if the next Xbox supported Steam, would it actually beat the Switch 2 or PS6? No, right?
Especially in Japan, sites like DLsite (a Japanese digital game platform) probably have more users than Steam anyway.
Furthermore, the real reason the PS5 can't become mainstream is that the Switch 1 and Switch 2 exist — in other words, because Nintendo exists.
And PCs are an even more niche presence than the PS5.
People often say '2060' or '2060 Super,' but even the RTX 2000 series can take advantage of the latest super-resolution tech, so the PS5 is actually a notch below even that.
PS5's QSSR (its super-resolution upscaler) uses the GPU itself,
so it eats into graphics performance.
It's less about making the graphics pretty
and more about patching up the rough image from performance mode.
The 2060, on the other hand, uses Tensor cores, so the GPU isn't sacrificed,
and it can produce cleaner image quality — that's a pretty big gap.
No one's building something this old at this point.
Back when it came out, it would've been around ¥150,000.
When I bought a PC with a 3060 Ti back in the day, it was ¥150,000.
Why are you old geezers in your 50s so intimidated by PCs 🤣
Hey now, 50s is underselling it.
These are veterans who actually lived through the Nixon administration — they're well past 60 😆
That's not necessarily true. With parts prices skyrocketing, there'll be more and more people who can't afford to upgrade or replace PC parts and end up going back to consoles.
In Japan that mostly means Switch 2, but overseas it wouldn't be surprising if they flowed back to PlayStation or Xbox.
It's a tradition going back to the PS2, after all.
The Switch 2 has the same performance level as a PS2 too.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Since late 2025, semiconductor shortages driven by AI-related demand have pushed up prices for SSDs and memory, making it harder to build a self-assembled PC at the same performance tier as a few years ago. The PS5’s APU is from AMD’s Zen 2 generation, released in 2020, and its GPU performance is often said to sit around the level of an RTX 2060 — close to the comparisons made in the thread. It’s worth noting, as technical background, that the PS5’s super-resolution tech, QSSR, processes using GPU resources, which tends to eat into rendering performance — a point often raised when comparing image quality against NVIDIA’s approach, which offloads that work to dedicated Tensor cores instead. The increasing number of disc-drive-less models and the issue of not truly owning downloaded software are also long-standing concerns among console users — worries that game libraries could be lost if a service shuts down — and are not unique claims specific to this thread.
