The story

Shogi player and investor Kiritani Hiroto, famous as the “master of shareholder perks” who lives off stock dividend-in-kind benefits, revealed his d Points balance on the October 12 broadcast of Nippon TV’s “Getsuyo kara Yofukashi” (Monday Midnight Talk). The thread buzzed with astonishment at just how huge the number was, while many pointed out that since both Rakuten Points and d Points come with monthly spending caps, even a massive stockpile can’t actually be used up all at once. The discussion branched out into Max Matsuura’s famous Rakuten Points haul and old stories about a broken engagement from the shogi world, along with comments about Kiritani’s single life and his ongoing cancer treatment.

Because watching an Osaka night-view video channel on YouTube is way more fun than watching "Peace-kun" at Omiya Park.

Jealous that he never has to worry about money, but watching this guy makes me think life's happier with a family even if you're poor.

Re: #7
His room is an absolute disaster, not even room to walk. What difference would having a family make? Would they just clean it up for him?

Re: #7
No idea if it's true or not, but after reading about that brutal love-triangle mess with his mentor, yeah, I get why he'd never want to marry. Too wild even for a show like "Yofukashi" to touch.

Re: #7
Kiritani's just too particular about everything — I think he's happier single. If he got married and had a wife and kids nagging him, the stress would make him go bald.
8AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:15
Make me his son-in-law, old man (´^ω^`)
I'm not bald yet so I'll be fine (´^ω^`)

Converted into "free sample" voucher terms, that's about ¥1 million worth.
10AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:15
I've got tens of thousands of yen in d Points too, but paying with d Points doesn't earn you more points, so it feels like a loss and I never use them. Rakuten, on the other hand, gives you points even when you pay with points.
11AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:17
A lot of d Points come with expiration dates, so I bet a ton of them just vanish unused. Can't be helped, so I burn mine at vending machines about once a week.
24AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:29
Re: #11
For regular (non time-limited) points, as long as you use or earn even 1 point, the expiration automatically extends another year.
12AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:18
He should really live a bit more at ease time-wise. Anyway, gimme some of that d Points.
13AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:19
Feels like the terms of service could wipe them out any time — can't trust it.
16AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:22
Meanwhile mine go straight back to zero no matter how much I save up.
18AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:23
Rich people don't live their lives worrying about point expiration dates.

Re: #18
Then don't sign up for it in the first place.
19AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:24
d Points? I've never even hit 1,000 of those in my life.
25AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:31
Max Matsuura's got several million in Rakuten Points.

Re: #25
Thanks to Matsuura, I learned that "Rakuten Points have a monthly spending cap" — a rule that will absolutely never apply to me personally.

Re: #21
Kiritani's mentor was Masuda Kōzō, the first player in history to hold the triple crown (Meijin, Kudan, and Ōsho titles), and he never had any trouble like that with his student Kiritani — you're thinking of someone else.

Re: #28
It was Yonenaga who made Kiritani's fiancée his mistress.

Re: #44
The guy in Re: #21 is mixing it up — thinking Yonenaga was Kiritani's mentor.
48AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:47
Re: #44
But apparently that fiancée was a hostess at a club, so wasn't he kind of being played from the start?
29AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:35
If it were me, I wouldn't want to let even a single point expire, so I'd use them right away. How do you even manage things to rack up that much?
32AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:37
Re: #29
d Points are basically permanent. He's got around ¥800 million in Monex mutual funds, and that alone racks up a ton of points. Back in the day they were called "Monex Points" and there wasn't much you could even do with them.
31AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:37
"Having a family means you'll live a proper, orderly life!" is a total fantasy.
34AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:39
Re: #31
Isn't that more just wishful thinking from lonely people who want it to be a fantasy?
33AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:39
Whether it's Rakuten, d Points, or PayPay, there's a limit on how many points you can use per month, so once a rich person stacks up points past a certain line, they literally can't spend them anymore — so getting more points stops meaning anything.
36AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:40
Re: #33
I send points to my family — is there a limit on that kind of transfer too?
38AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:40
My d Points usually only ever add up to a few hundred, but the 20,000 I got from the My Number Point campaign was my all-time high. Felt too precious to blow all at once so I've been chipping away at it, and I've still got about half left. I think it expires next year, so I need to use it before then.

Re: #38
Just use it through a brokerage.

Looks like SMBC Nikko Securities is ending support for it this coming March. The d Points service itself isn't ending though.

They had a relationship for decades, so he was basically like a mentor.

Re: #48
Well, maybe she never actually intended to end up with Kiritani in the first place.

Re: #50
Less like mentor and student, more like boss and underling, maybe.
51AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:53
His bike chain is completely rusted and stretched out, popping off every time he pedals. Fix it before filming — that's dangerous. He's gonna end up dying from a bike accident instead of his illness.
56AnonymousOct 14, 2026 13:59
Re: #51
His riding is scary, right? He's probably going to take someone down with him.
68AnonymousOct 14, 2026 14:21
Apparently he gets a 2-3 hour chemo IV drip once every three weeks, but has surgery still not happened? I feel like I read somewhere that operating after the cancer cells stop being active lowers the risk of metastasis.

Re: #68
Looked it up — apparently they removed about 60cm of his intestine. Removing the stomach tends to make people lose a ton of weight, but with the intestine maybe it's not as drastic?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Kiritani Hiroto is a former professional shogi player turned investor who gained fame on TV starting around 2011 as the “master of shareholder perks” for living entirely off stock dividend-in-kind benefits. d Points is a common point system run by NTT Docomo; like Rakuten Points and PayPay Points, some services impose a monthly cap on how many points can be used, and the thread repeatedly pointed out that this means even a huge balance can’t be spent all at once. Some comments referenced old engagement-trouble anecdotes from the shogi world, but these aren’t personal attacks on Kiritani himself — they’re long-circulated stories from shogi history. Kiritani has also publicly disclosed that he is undergoing cancer treatment, and the broadcast also showed him going to his hospital appointments.
