Chunichi Dragons Part Ways with Coaches Matsunaka, Hirata, Ochiai Eiji, and Nakamura Yutaka — 5ch: “The Coaching Staff Was Actually Fine”

From our other sites

The story

On the 13th, the Chunichi Dragons announced that four coaches — Nobuhiko Matsunaka, Ryosuke Hirata, Eiji Ochiai, and Yutaka Nakamura — will leave the team at the end of this season. Speculation is strong that Kimiyasu Kudo will take over as the new manager, and this coaching shake-up is seen as part of a broader restructuring in which the front office is said to be holding the reins on personnel decisions. On 5ch threads, some posters said the accomplished Ochiai shouldn’t have trouble finding his next job, while many others noted it’s hard to predict where Matsunaka or Hirata will land next. The discussion also grew heated over conflicting views: some argued the coaching staff itself wasn’t the problem — the manager was — while others took issue with the team filling the roles mostly with former players (OBs).

Ochiai Eiji's got the track record to land anywhere, really
But Matsunaka and Hirata…
Wonder what they'll do
3AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:28
So they're bringing in coaches from SoftBank, huh
4AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:28
I actually thought Matsunaka was pretty decent, but I guess he just doesn't click with Kudo?
32AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:42
Re: #4
Matsunaka was brought in by Inoue
Same prefecture (Kagoshima), same generation
I think Inoue was a year or two above Matsunaka in school
Since Inoue resigned, Matsunaka's probably stepping down too
5AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:28
Well, they can't exactly poach Kurano or Torigoe…
8AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:29
It's all the sketchy ones left, lol
And Asao staying on makes it even funnier
12AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:33
Will Nakamura Yutaka head back to the Fighters or the Tigers, I wonder
13AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:33
Hirata had already been pulled from third-base coach duty, so this was expected
15AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:34
Word was Kudo has zero say in personnel and it's all "ChunDra" (the Chunichi front office) calling the shots, but I guess they read the room enough to cut Matsunaka lol
19AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:35
Re: #15
They said they'd at least listen to his input, so it's not like he has zero say at all
18AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:35
Hirata will probably just go back to being a commentator and YouTuber and take it easy
Wouldn't be surprising if another team scoops up Matsunaka
Asao and Yamai are probably future manager candidates, so they probably didn't want to tarnish their résumés
21AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:36
Hirata will probably leak all kinds of inside info on Yakyu Ikkan (a baseball talk show/YouTube channel) or something
22AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:36
Is Kudo actually confirmed?
25AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:37
Re: #22
He said so himself at a talk show
23AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:37
I remember Hirata running a yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) joint or something — didn't realize he'd become a Chunichi coach
24AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:37
Yamai and Asao should just step down on their own
26AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:38
Yamai staying on as coach…
This team's got zero drive
27AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:38
I would've loved to see it if Kudo became manager and Matsunaka his coach
29AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:39
Didn't expect them to keep even Asao, who "Donden" (a pundit's nickname) said should be fired
Guess the merch sales must've been that good
30AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:39
Come to think of it, if Kudo — who's actually managed before — is taking over, they don't need HC Shima anymore, right?
31AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:40
The coaching staff was actually fine
It was the manager who was the problem
34AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:44
Ochiai did say he'd quit together with Tatsu(nori) back then
Matsunaka and Hirata's exits look front-office-driven, so Kudo probably isn't thrilled about that
Shima might be better suited for something like Yakult's farm team
35AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:45
Ochiai Eiji was practically the leader of the "Chunichi Reform Coalition"
Wish he could've at least joined the front office and kept pushing reforms
42AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:49
Re: #32
Matsunaka's from Kumamoto though
82AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:04
Re: #42
I meant to write "same Kyushu" and typo'd it
54AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:53
If you spend as much money as SoftBank, you can basically build another SoftBank — but is Chunichi willing to spend that much?
69AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:58
Re: #54
SoftBank took many years to get where they are too, it'll take a long time to reach that same scale
61AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:56
The coaches who stuck around must've recognized Kudo's got real ability
So he must be good
Kudo's got a great eye for talent, that's why he's won so many titles
66AnonymousOct 13, 2026 17:57
Re: #61
It's sad as a fan knowing Manager Kudo's reputation is going to crash and burn over the next few years 😭
73AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:00
Re: #69
Even Oh alone took 10 years
78AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:01
Re: #73
It took 5 years just to get to the raw-egg incident (fans famously threw eggs at his car during a losing streak)
83AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:05
When Kudo first took over, he brought in Iraki and Sekikawa as coaches even though he barely knew them, so I don't think he's particularly picky about that
88AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:10
Re: #83
Well, SoftBank's going to win no matter who the coaches are
97AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:14
Matsunaka's stats after winning the Triple Crown were just brutal
But he still brought in guys like Iguchi as coaches, so maybe he's surprisingly cut out for coaching after all
99AnonymousOct 13, 2026 18:15
Re: #97
In 2005 he won two of the three crowns, and his batting average was still good in 2006
He dropped off in 2007 but bounced back a bit in 2008
It's really from 2009 onward that it got bad

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Of the four coaches whose departures were announced, Eiji Ochiai and Yutaka Nakamura had long handled infield and baserunning instruction, Ryosuke Hirata was in charge of outfield defense, and Nobuhiko Matsunaka — brought in from SoftBank — handled batting. On 5ch, all sorts of speculation is flying about next season’s setup and who actually holds the reins on personnel decisions, but the only fact the team has confirmed is that the four coaches will leave at the end of this season; as of this writing, no successors or next destinations for any of them have been decided. Views on the coaching staff itself are also split, with some supporting the shake-up and others questioning why only the coaches are being replaced when the manager was the real problem — readers should keep the speculation in the thread separate from the facts the team has actually announced.
