“Partners” Swaps Its Sidekick Back from Kameyama to Kōbe — 5ch: “Enough Already”

The story

It’s been revealed that the partner role opposite Sugishita Ukyo (Mizutani Yutaka) in TV Asahi’s detective drama “Aibou” (Partners) is changing again, sparking reactions on 5ch. The partner role had returned to Kameyama Kaoru (Terawaki Yasufumi), but this time it’s swapping back to Kōbe Son (Oikawa Mitsuhiro). While some on the thread lamented “enough already, just let it end with Kameyama,” others defended the change on ratings grounds, pointing out that “even bringing Kameyama back didn’t boost the numbers.” Posters also raised the declining quality of the scripts, the shifting treatment of supporting characters like Aoki and Yonezawa, and the reality that a long-running show can’t easily end — sparking the kind of debate only fans who’ve followed the series across its many eras could have.

What are they even trying to do, just end it already

I've been following this forever but enough already — let's just end it with Kameyama

Re: #12
If Aibou disappears, detective dramas basically go extinct

Re: #15
There's still that Aiba show (eyes rolling back)

Re: #19
If that's the alternative, Inocchi's version is still better lol 😅

I do think it would've been cleaner to wrap things up with Kameyama. Also, if he gets kicked out of the Special Missions Unit, where does Kameyama even go? Back to Salween again?

Has Mizutani Yutaka's diva streak kicked in again? Worst case he ends up making his own daughter the final partner

Re: #23
At this point just make his wife's husband the partner

Didn't a coup happen in Salween? That's why he came back

Re: #27
Apparently season 25's premiere is a Salween storyline, and it's already back under military rule
34AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:42
Re: #27
The coup happened a good few seasons back, and after some twists and turns in a later case, the Kameyama couple got declared persona non grata and thrown out
35AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:43
Every partner that teams up with him meets a bad end, right? Wasn't that why people call him jinxed? Kōbe dies, Kameyama dies, THE END
38AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:44
Re: #35
Before Kameyama joined, the unit was basically a career graveyard — everyone just quit almost immediately. That's all the setting ever was
44AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:49
Honestly, ending it with Kameyama as the finale would've been fine…
46AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:50
Re: #44
Apparently that's gone now
50AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:52
On the flip side, why does the motorcycle-cop drama never swap its lead?
52AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:52
Re: #50
Because she was originally signed to Mizutani Yutaka's own talent agency. Same with Serizawa
54AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:53
Back in the Kōbe era the writers were actually good, but with the current crew, they probably can't write a decent story and will end up wrecking the characters
62AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:00
Re: #54
Oh, different writers now huh — that's rough
57AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:54
Bringing Kameyama back didn't boost the ratings, so it feels like they're pulling Kōbe back in from Aibou's peak-ratings era instead
59AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:56
Re: #57
Well yeah, it was honestly boring — Ukyo stopped reacting no matter what Kameyama did
60AnonymousOct 13, 2026 15:58
Aibou gets good ratings even on reruns, so there's no real reason to end it
64AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:01
Re: #60
Like with Detective Conan, too many people's livelihoods are tied up in it, so it's stuck in a spot where it can't end even if it wanted to — gotta keep everyone fed

Same deal as the trading cards — is pandering to nostalgia-obsessed fans really all they've got…
78AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:21
Re: #73
Why bring up trading cards all of a sudden?
77AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:21
Are they finally going to resolve things with that AI character James, who fled into the online world a while back and became impossible to deal with?
82AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:23
Re: #77
I'd love for them to bring that into this season, though it'll probably end up a shallow 'AI issues' story
80AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:23
Only talentless writers are left, so there's no way they can hit the quality of seasons 7 through 10, which were packed with classics
86AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:23
Re: #80
The episodes with smaller-scale cases around seasons 1-3 were actually pretty good
88AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:26
Knowing this production team, they'll probably find some way to bring back even the Chief Secretary eventually
92AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:29
Re: #88
Can't, he's dead. Honestly, Aibou really did get boring the moment they killed off the Chief Secretary
94AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:30
Re: #92
There are plenty of ways to pull a "he was secretly alive the whole time" twist, and there was a stretch where they were hinting at exactly that
93AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:29
That whole "shadowy mastermind!" type of storyline isn't very interesting, so they don't even need to bother for the New Year's special. That Urakamishika character who came out of nowhere, and the VR-nation plot before that, weren't any good either
96AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:30
Re: #93
There's been more and more stuff creeping in that just doesn't fit Aibou's world, huh
95AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:30
Honestly I don't mind that the current forensics guy can't beat Yonezawa at anything. Instead, they had a character with real personality, Aoki, filling the same support role. But having Aoki leave too and bringing in Haji — basically a watered-down knockoff of Aoki — is baffling. Why would they do that?
98AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:32
Re: #95
Maybe it's a sign of the times
97AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:31
Re: #92
About five seasons back there was an episode where he crosses paths with Kishibe Ittoku's character (unnamed), so with how Aibou is these days, I wouldn't be shocked if it turns out he's secretly alive and been scheming behind the scenes this whole time
102AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:36
Re: #97
They must be itching to bring him back somehow
104AnonymousOct 13, 2026 16:36
What happens to the show once Ishizaka Kōji passes away? He's 85, right?

Re: #104
Easy fix — just bring back his son

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Aibou” (Partners) is a TV Asahi detective drama that premiered in 2000, in which a rotating cast of actors has taken turns playing the “partner” opposite Sugishita Ukyo, portrayed by Mizutani Yutaka. The original partner, Kameyama Kaoru (Terawaki Yasufumi), had stepped down once before returning, and this time the role is switching from Kameyama back to Kōbe Son (Oikawa Mitsuhiro). The thread was split between those who wished the series had been wrapped up with Kameyama for good, and those who argued the switch makes sense since ratings were stronger during the Kōbe era. Posters also raised pointed criticism of declining script quality, the treatment of supporting characters like Aoki and Yonezawa, and the difficulty of ever ending a long-running hit. One point readers might easily get wrong: a cast change doesn’t mean the show is ending — over more than 20 years, swapping out the partner role has practically become a running tradition of the series itself.
