The story
A reaction video from overseas fans about the FF7 Remake’s direction and staging was shared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, sparking a mixed debate. The spark was a comparison video from an overseas user claiming that “the FF7 Remake is an insult to the original — they’ve turned it into a Disney theme park.” Many pointed out the mismatch between the photorealistic graphics and the still-anime-style scenario direction, and complaints stood out over how Aerith’s death scene was changed. On the other hand, some pushed back that fans were simply putting the original on too high a pedestal, and others welcomed the added content outright — so opinions never settled into a consensus.
Couldn’t argue with that.

Where'd the info come from that in the original version, that old lady was getting paid by Shinra just for squatting in Cloud's rebuilt house? Even if you try asking her about it through the dialogue options, she just tells you to get out, right?
Square Enix ('Kuzu-Eni,' i.e. 'Trash-Enix') nearly died making FF16 a PS exclusive for Sony's ('Chony') benefit, and when they finally reached for their last lifeline, this is what happened.
And after that, apparently Sony's treating Square Enix like trash too.
When I played the remake, I figured the story would branch off afterward into an 'Aerith survives' route, but in the end nothing really changed — they just threw in this parallel-world thing, and I still don't get what they were even going for.
You're forced into a fixed party and dragged along a fixed rail through a dull, dragging battle that isn't fun at all.
At least for the very end, let us go all out with whatever party and build we actually want.
If they'd kept the characters anime-style while just making the towns and dungeons properly 3D, nobody would've complained.
Then just go play the original forever, man.
The remake itself, I mean.
Yeah, no doubt about it.
Square Enix took the FF7 that Hironobu Sakaguchi finished and turned it into nothing but porn through some stupid fantasy of theirs.
No objections here.

They just hate the official canon.
Once a piece of art has been released, not even the creator can control it anymore.
The world of the work comes into being between the work and its audience — or more precisely, inside the mind of whoever experiences it.
Isn't it the other way around — they're changing it from the original because they hate the official canon?
They'll probably pull a Harry Potter-style ending too.
If you're going photorealistic, remake everything to match it.
It's not even photorealistic to begin with.
It feels like one of those Japanese live-action adaptations of a manga/anime.
Honestly, regardless of the original, stuff like this part is just garbage on its own.
The way the mob characters and the main characters feel like they're from completely different worlds is pretty bad too.
If anything, I'd think those people hate how Aerith's death scene got messed up even more.
Splitting what's basically a lesser movie-game compared to Ocarina of Time into three parts is just embarrassing.
It hasn't even released yet so I can't say for sure right now, but it's a proper evolution — prettier graphics, all wrapped into one release.
I really think FF7 should've gone that route too.
SCE (2006): "The FF7 Remake has the power to redefine an era."
PS fanboys: "No way, seriously?!"

Development Division 1: "Guess we'll hold onto it for later, then."
Development Division 1: "The PS5's in trouble! Let's split it up to drive hardware sales!"
FF fans: "Twenty years too slow."
Well, twenty years ago, it probably would've been true.
Background and Key Points of This Debate
The FF7 Remake has unfolded as a trilogy, running from 2020’s “FF7R” through “Rebirth” (2024), and some in the thread compared this to the full remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” which was released as a single, standalone title. Calls for an FF7 remake had already been circulating for nearly 20 years, going back to the PS3 tech demo unveiled in 2006, and one point of debate in the thread was the gap between that “20-year-long anticipation” and how the final product actually turned out. Another axis of the debate was the mismatch between visuals and presentation: several posters noted that despite the photorealistic-leaning graphics, the in-story direction and dialogue delivery remained anime-style, and opinions split over this. Views were also divided over how Aerith’s death was handled and the parallel-world elements, with one camp wanting it to stay true to the original and another appreciating the changes. It’s worth noting that phrases like “an insult to the original” and “a Disney theme park” reflect how some fans personally feel about it, not an official position stated by the developers.
