Lotte Coach Tsuyoshi Nishioka Steps Down After Just One Year

The story

On October 11, the Chiba Lotte Marines announced that first-team chief hitting coach and base-running coach Tsuyoshi Nishioka would be leaving the team. The club said it accepted a resignation request made by Nishioka himself, who had spent the season supporting new manager Saburo’s regime after joining the staff just one year earlier. The team finished fifth in the league, though it was also a year marked by the rise of young talent, including outfielder Shiki Nishikawa winning the league’s most-hits title. On 5ch, speculation swirled over the reason for his departure — ranging from friction with the manager to a possible poaching by Orix — but some pointed out that his contract had reportedly been for just one year from the start due to family circumstances, leaving reactions divided.

He'll make way more money as a TV personality than he ever would coaching anyway.

Guess Kamenashi's marriage marked the end of an era, huh?

Re: #4
Why Kamenashi?
Was he dating Minami or something?
12AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:44
Might be great for players whose style clicks with his, but for the ones who don't mesh with him, he seems like a total negative.

Re: #12
Apparently he drew on Yoshihiko Takahashi's and Kanamori's theories too, but he's clearly skilled — he didn't just help contact/gap hitters like Nishikawa and Ogawa, he also turned Yamaguchi into an actual slugger. That said, Saburo's own hitting advice reportedly gets pretty good reviews too. Wonder if they'll bring in Imae as the successor?

Re: #27
Imae wouldn't take that job.

Actually, it was Fukuura who helped Yamaguchi

Yamaguchi made the opening-day active roster this season, but managed just 1 hit in 8 games and struggled, getting removed from the roster on April 19 along with outfielder Hiromi Oka (34).
But in the minors he played 18 games, batting .302 with 4 home runs, taking advice from second-team manager Kazuya Fukuura (50) and second-team hitting coach Koichi Hori (57).

He worked on reshaping his form to "set up from the point where the top of the swing is built," and his form improved.
"I want to produce results to repay the people who helped me," he said, channeling his gratitude toward those around him into motivation.

So it was his own request to leave?
What on earth happened?

Yoshihiko Takahashi's YouTube channel is waiting for him. (a former pro known for his blunt talk show)

Re: #16
Probably can't coach the hardcore drill-sergeant way, and won't do it voluntarily either, I bet.
I'd love to hear him talk about it though.
17AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:48
He'd said from the start he was only planning to spend one year as a coach.
18AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:51
It was a one-year contract from the beginning — apparently he'd initially turned down the on-field job because his kids are young.

Oh, so it really was a one-year contract from the start?

Igarashi said something similar — that being a commentator gives you more flexibility.
19AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:51
So that means Saburo isn't stepping down, then?
21AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:52
A star player who made real waves even in the majors.
22AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:53
It's not like the manager is changing — so what happened here?
24AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:54
Lotte's lucky too — Kiyota, who could fill the hole Nishioka left, just became a free agent recently.
29AnonymousOct 11, 2026 10:59
Nah, is this Orix's doing? Their coach Kawashima just quit.
And Nishioka's an Osaka Toin alum — my guess is if they land Fujinami, who they're reportedly scouting, they'll also use Nishioka to keep him on a leash.
90AnonymousOct 11, 2026 11:57
Re: #29
Yeah, Orix poaching him does seem plausible.
91AnonymousOct 11, 2026 11:58
Re: #29
Putting a leash on Fujinami — where would they even drag him around to? (lol)
30AnonymousOct 11, 2026 11:00
Let's get him hired as the dedicated coach at Sho Nakata's training facility.
31AnonymousOct 11, 2026 11:01
Lotte had a lot of position players break out this year, and if the main credit goes to Nishioka, won't other teams come calling with offers?
32AnonymousOct 11, 2026 11:02
Wait, he was coaching? I didn't even realize he'd retired.

Did he clash with the front office?

Was the mood in the clubhouse bad?

Singling out Coach Nishioka's name like this, at this point in the season,
almost putting him on display like this — this Lotte front office.

Feels like there's something dark going on here.

Could he be eyeing a spot with the Dragons under Kudo's new regime?
Not sure if he actually has any connection to Kudo though.

Re: #67
Is there anyone who'd actually want a coaching job with the Dragons? Especially coming in from outside — they'd have to beg him to come, practically on bended knee.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Tsuyoshi Nishioka is a former professional baseball player who played for the Kintetsu Buffaloes and the Lotte Marines before also spending time in the majors (with the Minnesota Twins) and with the Hanshin Tigers. Starting this season, he had joined Lotte’s coaching staff as first-team hitting coach and base-running coach, supporting new manager Saburo’s regime. The only fact the club has made public is that it “accepted a resignation request from Nishioka himself” — no specific reason for his departure has been disclosed. Within the thread, speculation about friction with the manager or a poaching move by Orix stood out, but none of it is based on any official team statement or explanation from Nishioka himself, and none of it is confirmed. At the same time, some comments pointed out that it had been reported, from the time he was hired, that his contract was for one year due to family circumstances — making it premature to jump from the timing of the departure announcement alone to conclusions like a “firing” or a “falling out.” There’s a real possibility this was simply an amicable end to a fixed-term contract, a nuance that’s easy to miss if you only look at the comments in the thread.
