Murakami Haruki Calls SNS a “Dumping Ground for Bad Writing” — 5ch Claps Back: “Worse Than Bathroom Graffiti”

From our other sites

The story

A topic surfaced on 5ch after novelist Haruki Murakami was reported to have said, “I don’t do SNS because it’s a dumping ground for crappy writing.” In the thread, many voices agreed, saying things like “He’s dead right — it’s just people who can’t even fill a sheet of manuscript paper getting mad.” At the same time, others pointed out that the style of his landmark novel Hear the Wind Sing is itself built on short, colloquial sentences — practically “SNS-like” — and that it’s contradictory to call 5ch itself “bathroom graffiti” while only criticizing the writing on X (Twitter). Some even mocked a reply written with sloppy punctuation as “proof that the writing really is bad.”

Murakami Haruki: "I don't do SNS. It's a dumping ground for crappy writing" → Twitter users have a total meltdown

I don't do SNS. Because it's a dumping ground for crappy writing

— which is itself a crappy sentence
8AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:45
I totally get that reading good writing and listening to good music matters in life
but then why are you cheering for Yakult, who play such crappy baseball? (Murakami's a well-known Yakult Swallows fan)
9AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:45
I bet even most SNS users would agree with that opinion
what's with the "hating it without even trying" act, gross
10AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:48
This one's spot on
only people with too much time and a strong need for validation should be doing this
13AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:55
His novel protagonists seem exactly like the type of guy who'd be posting whiny nonsense on Twitter all day though
15AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:58
Ironically, this thread is proving Haruki right
16AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:58
If Murakami Haruki seriously trolled me, I think I'd cry
17AnonymousOct 10, 2026 07:59
The reply section is just drowning in crappy writing
18AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:02
There's a debate to be had over what counts as "crappy writing," but people want to read it, so who cares
it's no different from us not wanting to read Murakami's novels
19AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:03
Impressive how someone can claim not to care that their SNS writing gets called crap, yet clearly it stings
22AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:05
X, which ranks below the bathroom-graffiti site that is 5channel, doesn't even qualify as "writing" in the first place
23AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:06
That old gray-haired guy's front-facing selfie captioned "I see." is the best
25AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:08
They're proving the point themselves by replying with terrible writing
26AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:15
This guy loses it every year around Nobel Prize season, doesn't he
32AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:39
Re: #26
Did something happen this year?
27AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:19
It's completely correct
it's just people who can't even fill five sheets of manuscript paper getting mad
30AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:34
It's not that the writing itself is crap — it's that people whose intelligence only lets them write like that are also on SNS
31AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:38
"Refined" and "skilled" aren't the same thing
there's a crowd out there that can't even read a short sentence like this one accurately and just lashes out with knee-jerk reactions, so it's hardly strange that some people want to keep their distance from that
33AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:40
5ch users themselves call this place bathroom graffiti
so why won't X admit it's a dumping ground for crappy writing too
does everyone there think they're writing high-minded prose?
34AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:40
Once smartphones and SNS took off around 2010
the civility and quality of internet users dropped off a cliff
35AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:50
Frozen fried rice LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
36AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:51
The opening lines of his debut novel Hear the Wind Sing
37AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:52
It's not something people trying to do anything refined would bother looking at anyway
38AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:53
Sure, it's unedited, sloppy short-form writing full of typos and grammar mistakes
but the esteemed author whose own prose gets used as long-form reading comprehension material is absolutely right
39AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:56
These days plenty of posts are just AI bots anyway
so taking any of it seriously is a waste of time
40AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:56
Losing it without even using punctuation properly, lol
aren't you embarrassed, lol
41AnonymousOct 10, 2026 08:57
Don't say that, just go listen to a Tsunku song instead

it'll blow you away! ("Tsunku" produced many Hello! Project idol groups; this thread is on 5ch's Hello! Project board)
51AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:17
It's only two or three lines on SNS, lol
why not try writing a rebuttal spanning hundreds of pages in refined prose like the great sensei, lol
if you actually pulled that off, you might even earn some respect, lol
54AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:19
Re: #51
these days they'd probably just churn that out endlessly with AI
55AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:20
Re: #51
feels like they'd come back after agonizing over every word, lol

Novelists aside, manga artists seem to have a higher rate of clumsy, amateurish posts
guess that makes sense — they're people whose expression only really comes together when paired with artwork
73AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:48
Re: #69
also, about half of manga artists are basically puppets of their editors anyway
some of them are just the ones doing the drawing

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Murakami Haruki has long made clear his stance of keeping distance from SNS and contemporary, real-time information consumption, and this remark appears to be an extension of that stance. What split opinion in the thread was less the content of the remark itself than the question of “who has the standing to say it.” While there was considerable agreement with the view that SNS writing is of low quality, just as many replies questioned the credibility of criticizing others’ writing from that position — pointing out that his early landmark novel Hear the Wind Sing is itself written in a style built from short, colloquial sentences, and that 5ch itself openly calls itself an anonymous graffiti board. Note that the thread does not specify when or in which outlet this remark was made, and the original source cannot be confirmed from the material behind this article.
