Is a PS5 with 1TB Storage a Bargain at ¥55,000? 5ch Erupts Over Actual Usable Capacity

Written by

A post claiming “you can buy a PS5 with 1TB of storage for ¥55,000” went viral on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. While some praised the price as a steal compared to buying PC parts separately, others pointed out that against the advertised 825GB, the actual usable capacity is only around 667GB — sparking a heated argument over how to interpret the storage figures.

Claims that the PS5 has reached RTX 3060-class performance, plus price comparisons noting a standalone GPU alone costs over ¥60,000, only fueled the cost-performance debate, which never reached a consensus.

A PS5 with better gaming performance than this, 1TB of storage, AND a ¥10,000 controller thrown in, all for ¥55,000 — it genuinely makes no sense.

An SSD alone runs you ¥20,000-30,000.

Yeah, it's basically catching up to SanDisk Extreme-tier pricing now (a premium SSD line — "SDex").

Is lying some kind of terminal illness for these people?

No question, it's a sickness.

CPU: ¥20,000
GPU: ¥80,000
SSD: ¥30,000
Motherboard: ¥20,000
Controller: ¥10,000

That's how much value you're getting.

So the gap between that estimated value and the actual price is Sony eating the loss (selling at a deficit).
11Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:41:22.44ID:8QdcB7JH0
Wait, the PS5 has already surpassed the RTX 3060 in performance?
At this rate it'll be beating the 3070 by next year 😌
23Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:49:18.78ID:+KlYsS0E0
>>11
Even in benchmarks it beats the 3060.

What benchmark?

I don't want to become the kind of person who lies without batting an eye.

Wait, is it still 1TB right now? Feels like they quietly downsized it and relaunched it as some "new, easier-to-swallow size" (a dig at marketing spin, the kind of phrase usually used for "easier to take" pills).
16Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:44:50.22ID:7Xi1+etl0
>>12
The ¥55,000 model has 825GB, but the system reserves about 160GB, so what you can actually use is around 660GB.
17Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:44:58.49ID:4fiY0kEU0
>>13
Isn't that the same 825GB as the original model?
21Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:46:31.55ID:7Xi1+etl0
>>17
The original model was 1TB, and 825GB was what was left after the system took its cut.
24Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:49:33.15ID:4fiY0kEU0
>>21
Was it? Mine's the original disc-drive model and I'm pretty sure it's 825GB — wasn't 1TB the later revision?
27Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 18:51:50.89ID:Gs3XACWBd
>>21
Nope. It's 825GB total, and after the system takes its share you're left with 670.
39Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 19:07:25.16ID:pMUQUdWO0
PlayStation fans' inferiority complex about PCs is on another level.

I own both an Xbox Ally X and a PS5, and I just use each for what it's good at.
Not really sure what "complex" you're talking about.

For reference, this is an SSD that was on sale at GEO (a Japanese used-goods/game retailer) a year ago.

Why do PlayStation fanboys keep telling lies that get caught this fast?

Guess your brain rots once you start worshipping PlayStation.
55Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 19:26:11.87ID:B2D6aKAP0
Wait, even Windows 11 doesn't use anywhere near 50GB — but the PS5, which can only play games, eats up something like 150GB just for the system?
57Anonymous2026/08/26(水) 19:28:49.41ID:8QdcB7JH0
>>55
Yeah, that genuinely is bizarre.

The NAND chip installed is 768GiB (825GB). After setting aside over-provisioning space, what's left for the user is 715GiB (768GB).

Every other manufacturer sells this exact SSD labeled as 768GB — only "Shitty Sony" (a common 5ch insult pun, "クソニー") labels it 825GB.

For the PS5, after the system takes its cut, the user is actually left with 667GiB (716GB).

If the over-provisioning matches what normal SSD makers use, that means the PS5's system is hogging 48GiB.

This guy's latest post is getting torched, lol
He's been losing his mind over the "ban physical discs" crusade lately, so I figured he'd catch heat eventually lol

I mean, he's not wrong, but a PlayStation fan probably shouldn't be calling other users "a cancer on the game industry."

I get wanting third-party games to actually release.
But I don't get getting angry just because a third-party game went multiplatform.

He's got a point, but even for the sake of an example, did he need to drag in Switch and Xbox?
Just stick to PlayStation.

The RTX 5060 is ¥63,000 though.

The 8GB version doesn't have much demand, that's why it's cheap.

There's a genuinely pure-bred PlayStation zealot loose in that thread
Claiming the PS6 will be backward-compatible with old discs, apparently.

That's just the usual crowd from the "Sokuho" (breaking news) board.

Scary how being quarantined in a place like that for years turns you into this.

When you see firsthand that the "Sokuho" board really is a parallel universe detached from reality, it goes past shock straight into fear.

Wait, doesn't the ¥55,000 model actually have less storage?

Pretty sure it was something like 800GB.
