The story
Family restaurant chain Bikkuri Donkey kicked off its annual “Gulliver” fair on October 7. Now in its 10th year, the campaign rolls out limited-time menu items with extra-large portions, and this year’s headliner is the “Monster Gulliver Burg Dish” — two 400g hamburger steaks served with triple rice and double salad. Priced at ¥4,460, the dish split opinion on 5ch over whether the portion-to-price ratio was fair. Some commenters argued the rice and salad should be cut back in favor of more meat, while others compared the price directly to steak or sushi, saying those options would be the better deal.

What people said
The salad is unnecessary.
Exactly.
They should just market it as "a chance to eat a huge slab of meat." Outside of a big-eater challenge menu, what's the point of padding it out with "triple rice"?
Wait, they got rid of that menu board?
That thing was the soul of Bikkuri Donkey.
People who can't tell the difference are welcome to eat it.
By "chemical seasoning" you mean salt, right?
A pure product of a chemical reaction.
Why would the one that opened first need to change its name, lol
Though I guess you could just order two.
Right, you can't get a sense of the size.
What is this, a fisherman's trophy print? (lol)
Back when I was a student, the giant parfait was about ¥3,000. They said they'd treat me if I finished it, so I figured I could easily manage.
Turned out I couldn't — the coffee part was just too gross.
I feel like I could handle 800g with triple rice though.
I still eat more than a kid out of sheer cheapness. A skinny big-eater.
I wonder if students these days just go to Saizeriya instead.
Sorry, but you can't buy mixed ground meat that cheap anymore these days.
Also, supermarket ground meat is mostly fat — it practically disappears when you cook it.
Come on, now…
There used to be two Kobe World Buffet locations in my area, but they both went under.
Re: #85
It's the one chain where a middle-aged guy can order a parfait without getting judged. If anything, there are more older male customers than you'd think.
I didn't know either until I went into a store that had the poster up for it. They should put that poster in every location.
You'd be better off eating 40 of Ishii's packaged mini hamburger steaks.
The "Squid's Ark" dish used to be around ¥500 too, and now it's ¥900.
If you're a big-eating teenager, wouldn't you just go to an all-you-can-eat yakiniku or shabu-shabu place instead?
Buy a decent sauce and you've basically got restaurant quality.
Rice prices have even dropped back to half of what they were.
Leafy greens are a bit pricey but you don't even need them.
And that's ¥4,500?
I'd just go get sushi instead.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Bikkuri Donkey’s “Gulliver” fair is an annual tradition now in its 10th year, with the chain devising ever-larger menu items each time. Looking at the ¥4,460 price tag alone might make it seem expensive, but the original article doesn’t break down the price difference from regular menu items or the cost breakdown, so it’s worth noting that the thread’s sense of “expensive” or “cheap” is ultimately a subjective judgment depending on what each commenter is comparing it to. The discussion broke down into two main points. One was a critique of the portion composition — the argument that if you’re going to increase the volume, the hamburger steak itself should be made bigger, and padding it out with extra rice and salad misses the point. The other was a cost-to-value comparison — the argument that for the same amount of money, other dining options might offer more satisfaction. Readers should keep in mind that neither point comes from an actual side-by-side comparison; both are simply reactions to the restaurant’s pricing.
