Ijuin Hikaru Apologizes for Calling Crayon Shin-chan Writer’s Episode “Boring”

The story

On TBS Radio’s “Ijuin Hikaru: Shinya no Bakajikara,” Ijuin Hikaru’s remark that the September 19 episode of Crayon Shin-chan, “It’s the Nohara Couple’s Afternoon,” was “boring enough to make your legs give out” sparked controversy. The episode barely featured the show’s protagonist, Shinnosuke, and after screenwriter Sho Hasumi responded on his own radio show, Ijuin apologized during the ending segment of the September 28 late-night broadcast, saying, “I caused Hasumi a great deal of trouble.” Reactions on 5ch split between those praising Ijuin for apologizing sincerely, those who felt no apology was needed since he was just sharing his opinion, and those who rewatched the episode themselves and weighed in on its merits.

Talent Ijuin Hikaru appeared on the late-night broadcast of “JUNK Ijuin Hikaru: Shinya no Bakajikara” (TBS Radio) on September 28 and addressed, during the show’s ending segment, the controversy that had erupted following the previous week’s broadcast.

The episode Hasumi wrote was the September 19 installment of Crayon Shin-chan, “It’s the Nohara Couple’s Afternoon” — an unusual episode that barely featured Shinnosuke, focusing instead on a conversation between his parents, Hiroshi and Misae.

On the late-night broadcast on the 21st, Ijuin had said the episode was “boring enough to make your legs give out,” among other remarks. Hasumi responded on his own radio show, revealing that he had been a listener of Ijuin’s program back in his college days.

Wow, he's really grown up…
We'll always be on Ijuin's side, so don't let this get you down!
5AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:51
And here come the comedy world's third parties again, chiming in with "Ijuin's so uncool."
6AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:52
The original creator's probably crying somewhere too.
70AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:24
Re: #6
From the great beyond, probably (a nod to creator Yoshito Usui, who passed away in 2009).
7AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:52
He was all "everyone's gonna turn on me but I'm saying it anyway!" and now what — he's bailing like the people kicking up a fuss are the ones in the wrong.

Re: #7
Think about it for a second:
the more noise this makes, the more this writer gets branded "the boring writer," regardless of the facts.
Whether Ijuin "wins" or "loses" this, that's how it plays out.
The more it gets rehashed, the worse it looks for the writer.
Ijuin's already known for being like this, so even if it blows up, it's just fodder for his radio show.

A world where you can't even say what you want to say — poison! (riffing on the 90s hit song lyric)
11AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:53
If it's TV Tokyo-style criticism, Sakuma's already in that lane too, so it works out fine.
80AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:27
Re: #11
Why would you promote a TV Asahi show on TV Tokyo?
Hasumi might not be funny, but the way he's handled this whole thing shows he's smart.
14AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:55
>>"In the end, saying anything just feeds the peanut gallery"

He lit the fire himself and now says this?
25AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:00
Re: #14
Blaming everyone else, lol.
15AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:56
This has happened before.
The second he finds out someone's a listener of his show, his attitude does a total 180.
It's nothing new.
16AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:56
Critique and opinions should be free to say however you like — Japan's a free country, after all.
17AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:57
I was thinking the same thing — slamming someone like that is rough, when he's basically this era's version of the guy on the left in Y●renz (a comedy duo — censored here, but named outright in the next reply).
62AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:19
Re: #17
Yeah, even Yarenz, who he'd taken a liking to, used to rib him about it.
18AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:57
Well, it WAS boring enough to make your legs give out, lol.
19AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:57
Come to think of it, you don't see Kanda Hakuzan (a rakugo/kodan storyteller) on TV much anymore.
Maybe his tongue got a little too sharp and people stopped liking him.
20AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:57
Sure it was boring, but wasn't that kind of the point — a dialogue-driven episode built around that concept?
21AnonymousOct 1, 2026 14:58
Still, knowing when to sheathe your sword like this is probably the secret to a long career.
26AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:01
Some kodan storyteller's gonna jump on this, right?
Oh right, Hakuzan.
51AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:13
Re: #26
He was already teasing it on last week's "Towazugatari." He said: "The movie I watched for the first time in twenty-odd years was boring enough to make your legs give out — say that and people call you an out-of-touch old man, but this is an homage to Ijuin. This year's buzzword of the year is either 'Riku/Ryu' (the figure-skating pair's nickname) or 'boring enough to make your legs give out.'"
That recording was made before Hasumi's rebuttal, so he'll probably really dig into it on tomorrow's broadcast.
37AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:05
This isn't a suggestion from the bottom up, it's from the top down…
That's the kind of guy who'd get pulled off a show for power harassment.
45AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:11
Re: #37
If Ijuin were doing some kind of creative work himself, they'd be on equal footing —
but if he's not, he's not "above" anyone.
52AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:14
Re: #45
As a comedian/variety personality, he's in a higher-status position —
it'd make sense if the complaint were aimed at the anime production as a whole rather than at an individual.
63AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:20
Re: #45
He's actually planned and hosted variety shows himself. A lot of people don't know because they aired on BS.

65AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:21
Just watched it myself, and yeah, this is shockingly boring.
First off, what they're talking about has almost nothing to do with Misae and Hiroshi themselves.
And it's not like the conversation is even funny either.
83AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:28
Re: #65
I just watched it too — no climax, no punchline, basically a self-deprecating episode that indirectly jokes about Crayon Shin-chan in a bad way. I was going "???" the whole time.
74AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:25
There are quite a few people online who don't know Hasumi but do dislike Ijuin — that was probably a shock to people who vaguely had a favorable impression of Ijuin.
86AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:30
Re: #74
Because on TV, Ijuin comes across as smart and like a nice guy.
77AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:26
Don't apologize for calling something boring when it was boring.
84AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:28
Re: #77-78
Like it says in Re: #56, Hasumi actually accepted the "it was boring" opinion —
his pushback was about other stuff, telling him not to spread misinformation.

He probably couldn't find a solid source for that, so he figured apologizing would let him fudge it and put the whole thing to rest.
79AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:27
Hasumi's not exactly acting high and mighty either — he shows up on silly variety shows on Abema and the like.
I don't really get why Ijuin got so groveling about it.
88AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:32
Wake up and realize it's weird enough that a 58-year-old is watching Crayon Shin-chan and reviewing it.
92AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:33
Re: #88
There's nothing weird about that part.
Don't use the chaos as cover to start some low-level argument.
97AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:36
He said it himself, so I don't get what he means by "feeding the peanut gallery" — can someone explain?
What even is the "peanut gallery" here?
98AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:37
Re: #97
People who criticize without even listening.
Like you.
100AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:39
Re: #98
That doesn't explain anything.
He said it on the radio — what does "peanut gallery" even mean in that context?
Is that really a word a radio host should use about people he doesn't even know, talking on the air?
101AnonymousOct 1, 2026 15:40
Re: #100
The "peanut gallery" means people who criticize without listening, just going off summary sites and the like.
Kuruma's different, since he actually talked to Hasumi directly.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Ijuin Hikaru: Shinya no Bakajikara” is a long-running flagship TBS Radio program hosted by Ijuin Hikaru, known for his trademark style of giving blunt, honest opinions. Sho Hasumi is a broadcast writer and actor who, among other work, writes for Crayon Shin-chan; the episode at the center of this controversy, “It’s the Nohara Couple’s Afternoon,” was an unusually structured installment that barely featured the show’s protagonist. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much whether the apology itself was warranted, but a clash between two positions: that there’s nothing wrong with stating an honest opinion, versus that remarks from someone with influence require more consideration. The real sticking point was where to draw the line on who gets to criticize what, and how. Some commenters also pointed out that Hasumi himself never disputed the “boring” opinion — Ijuin’s apology was actually about a separate issue — meaning that treating the apology as a simple retraction of his review may not match what actually happened.
