Sakura Wars 30th Anniversary Illustration Leaves Out Only the New Sakura Wars Protagonist — 5ch: ‘Guess They Want to Forget It Ever Happened?’

The story

This week’s Famitsu cover featured a newly drawn commemorative illustration celebrating Sakura Wars’ 30th anniversary, bringing together protagonists from across the series’ history — but the protagonist of “New Sakura Wars,” produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi, was notably missing. On 5ch, reactions ranged from “Maybe even Sega treats the new game as a black mark on its history” to pointed criticism of the production process (“Shouldn’t the character designer of the latest game normally be the one asked to draw it?”). Opinions also diverged over the lineage of character design across the series and how to judge New Sakura Wars’ sweeping overhaul of the game system.

Kind of dark that the protagonist from V — which you could also call a black mark on the series — made the cut, but the New protagonist didn't. Guess Sega really wants to pretend New Sakura Wars never happened.

I mean, come on, New Sakura's character design is way better than that thing in the top left, no contest.
5AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:57
Well, say what you will, Gemini's shown up plenty in Project X Zone and Super Robot Wars anyway…
6AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:58
If I had to defend it — maybe it's because the character designer is different? Then again, it IS the latest entry, so you'd think the person who drew the latest game would normally be the one to draw this. And if they weren't going to line up every single character, they could've just used a representative Sakura instead. This is the one pattern you really shouldn't do.

Re: #6
Probably a black mark even for the person who drew the latest game.

Re: #1
Makes you wonder — looking back at how Zelda "rethought its conventions," what was different [that let it succeed]?
46AnonymousSep 28, 2026 16:33
Re: #7
Zelda never touched the core of the game — beating enemies, using items, solving puzzles, that core loop stayed intact. New Sakura Wars, on the other hand, literally tore everything down.

Re: #7
Breath of the Wild had some fresh ideas, sure, but I felt like it was basically a natural evolution of Wind Waker and Skyward Sword.
8AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:02
Wait, where's the one voiced by Ayane Sakura? lol
Actually, why'd they even cast people like Ayane Sakura, Saori Hayami, and Maaya Uchida for New Sakura Wars in the first place?
12AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:10
Isn't the character design for New [Sakura Wars] by KBTIT?
13AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:12
Why isn't Coquelicot in there?
Are they out of their minds?

Somebody calm down and think this through.
14AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:19
Well of course it looks different, it's a different character designer. This is what you get when you commission Kosuke Fujishima.

Re: #14
Actually, this one was drawn by Matsubara.
20AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:30
Re: #14
People mix this up a lot, but Kosuke Fujishima only ever did the original character concepts for Sakura Wars 1 through 5 — the actual character designs and most of the artwork you see were done by veteran animator Hidenori Matsubara.

Where's Nagoshi these days? Get him to comment on Puyo Puyo Champions or something.
19AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:30
This and Dai no Daibouken (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai) really got a raw deal.

They were resting peacefully in their graves, and then get dug back up only to be kicked while down and reburied…

Do these developers have no heart at all?

Re: #19
At least with Dai, they finally finished the anime all the way through this time, so that part was good. Everything else, though… well, the manga running right now is good too.

Re: #19
Dai's fine outside of the games — it's just on a completely different level from Sakura.
21AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:37
It's the 30th anniversary, but the lineup hasn't changed at all since the 10th.
23AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:39
They're not making a sequel or a new entry, so why even bother with a feature like this?
25AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:41
Are you watching, Nago-san…? This is the requiem we send to you.
26AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:48
Surely they'll bring it up somewhere in the article itself, right? If they don't, well, that tells you everything.
32AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:04
That's Fujishima's style, not Matsubara's — man, this is lame.
41AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:38
Re: #32
Fujishima's take on Sakura Wars art looks completely different from what people who actually played the games are used to seeing, so it's easy to tell right away.
33AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:10
Same thing happened with the Gundam 50th anniversary short film that gathered protagonists from every anime series — Shinn Asuka was the only one missing.
42AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:46
Re: #33
He ended up basically in the enemy boss slot instead of the protagonist slot anyway — and on Athrun's side, not Kira's, no less.
34AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:13
Hidenori Matsubara can draw in a style like In This Corner of the World, so he's more versatile than Kosuke Fujishima.
53AnonymousSep 28, 2026 17:14
He tried to turn it down himself, got forced into it anyway, and then got bashed by people who don't even know the backstory — that's just tragic.
54AnonymousSep 28, 2026 17:22
Re: #53
After seeing how that whole thing played out, any sane creator would steer clear of this IP. They buried the brand in more ways than one.
64AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:31
Re: #53
Same with Takashi Yamazaki on Dragon Quest: Your Story — he turned it down because he didn't know Dragon Quest, but Horii and Square Enix pushed him into it anyway. Seems like a lot of these disastrous projects come down to screwups that have nothing to do with the creator's own talent.
75AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:22
So for the New Sakura Wars anime, they actually brought in the Bleach character designer — not sure if that was a good call or not, though.
91AnonymousSep 28, 2026 21:06
Re: #75
That was for the main game's key character design, not the anime. The sub-designer's heroine for the anime was cute, though.
80AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:56
Re: #1
Not totally sure about this, but here's the Kubo one:

Anyway, does Famitsu only ever do otaku-pandering covers these days? That's probably why sales keep dropping. Couldn't they just stick the otaku stuff on a "cover 2" on the back instead? lol
99AnonymousSep 28, 2026 22:15
So Sakura Wars 5 counts as canon too, huh. That's the one that killed the series.

Re: #99
Sega moves too fast on everything — guess they jumped on the political-correctness bandwagon too early as well…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sakura Wars is a simulation RPG Sega released in 1996. New Sakura Wars, released in 2019, was produced by Toshihiro Nagoshi and featured a sweeping overhaul of both the battle system and character designs. Across the series’ history, Kosuke Fujishima has handled the original character concepts, while much of the actual artwork has been drawn by veteran animator Hidenori Matsubara — and in this thread, opinions were split over which artist’s style the new illustration more closely resembles. The fact that “only the protagonist is missing” is simply a matter of this particular illustration’s composition; it’s easy to misread this as an official announcement that New Sakura Wars has been discontinued or branded a franchise embarrassment, which it has not been. As commenters pointed out with the example of Shinn Asuka being left out of a Gundam 50th anniversary illustration, such “omissions” in commemorative art can simply come down to production circumstances, so a definitive judgment should be avoided.
