The story

A survey by the NPO Single Mothers’ Forum, which supports single-parent households, found that in 36.9% of these families children got by on two meals a day or fewer during summer break. The survey covered roughly 2,200 single-parent households nationwide from July 20 to 26, and many parents cited cutting food costs as the reason. In response, the group says the child-rearing allowance hasn’t kept pace with rising prices and is calling for it to be expanded. On 5ch, users weighed in with everything from their own eating habits to opinions on how benefit payments should be spent.

A survey by a private organization found on the 6th that in 36.9% of single-parent households, children got by on two meals a day or fewer during summer break. Most parents cited cutting food costs as the reason, suggesting rising prices are forcing families to skimp on children’s meals.

Masako Komori, head of the NPO Single Mothers’ Forum (Tokyo), which conducted the survey, said the child-rearing allowance for low-income single-parent households “hasn’t kept up with rising prices” and is calling on the government to expand it.

The survey was conducted nationwide among single-parent households from July 20 to 26, drawing about 2,200 responses.

Never just hand out cash

They'll just take the vouchers to a discount ticket shop and cash them in

Just eat oatmeal
Quick oats come pre-crushed, so 3 minutes in the microwave and it's nice and mushy

Quick oats: 50g
Ground black sesame: 10g
Kinako (roasted soybean flour): 15g
Sugar: 20g
Frozen strawberries: 30g
Water: 300cc

The child allowance is supposed to be spent on the kids. Why are you assuming the parent doesn't work? Tacopii 🐙 (a nod to the manga/anime character Tacopyi, often invoked sarcastically for naive positivity)

Background and Key Points of This Story

The child-rearing allowance is a national benefit for low-income single-parent households, but its payment amount isn’t automatically raised in step with inflation—adjusting the level requires a change to the system itself. This survey argues the allowance hasn’t kept pace with actual rising living costs; roughly 2,200 responses gives it a reasonable sample size, though it’s worth noting the responses were voluntary. On the thread, many commenters chimed in with “two meals is normal” or “I lived the same way,” but these are mostly accounts of adults’ eating habits, which rest on different assumptions than the nutritional needs of children who are still growing. Some questioned how the benefit money gets spent, but the survey itself is about whether the payment level is adequate, not an audit of how individual households use the funds.
