  • Fukushima University Issues Official Statement Over ‘Wakatte TV’ Video, Citing Insensitive Remarks About the Nuclear Plant

Fukushima University has posted an official statement on its website concerning a video from the YouTube channel ‘Wakatte TV.’ The university says the video contained “remarks that could be perceived as lacking consideration” toward its students and its educational and research activities, and commentators have pointed to a link with discussion of the nuclear power plant. On 5channel, opinions split over whether the video was just “entertainment from a foul-mouthed character” or “an overreach that dragged a real university and its students into it,” and the thread also spun off into a debate about one cast member’s academic background.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Even now, more than a decade after the nuclear disaster, Fukushima University remains in a position where it has little choice but to stay sensitive about its students being linked to the keyword “nuclear power plant.” What stands out about this video is that the university officially objected to remarks suggesting they didn’t want students touching on the nuclear plant topic, calling them “lacking in consideration” — this wasn’t simply a protest against a tasteless joke, but touched on context the region and the university have carried for years, which is what fueled the backlash. On the thread, opinions split between defenders who framed it as “entertainment built around a foul-mouthed persona” and critics who saw it as “hurting a real university and its students for money,” while a parallel debate flared up over the cast member’s actual education level (Kyoto University dropout, technically a high school graduate). Posts comparing this to other real-life streamers’ behavior also appeared, but any that couldn’t be verified have been left out of this article.

  • A Year After the Breakup, Still Not Over Her — 5ch: “It’s Been a Year and I’m Still a Wreck”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Nanjyo (“Live Newsflash”) board started by a man posting, “My girlfriend dumped me and I’m so sad 😭.” Reading closely, though, it turns out the breakup actually happened a year ago, and the poster still can’t get over her. Commenters offered the standard advice that “you’ll forget her once you get a new girlfriend,” but the poster kept insisting he “can’t move on to a new relationship because he can’t forget his ex.” The thread grew into a wider debate over whether men and women recover from breakups differently.

    Background and Talking Points

First-person confession threads that open with “I did such-and-such” are a familiar format on Nanjyo-style boards, and it’s worth noting there’s no way to verify whether the poster is describing a genuine personal experience. This thread, too, opens simply with “my girlfriend dumped me,” but following the replies reveals that a full year had actually passed since the breakup. Several comments echo the idea that “men cling to lingering feelings while women move on quickly” — a popular claim online, though not one backed by any actual statistics. It’s also typical of this kind of thread that practical advice like “just chase your libido and move on” or “there are plenty of replacements out there” never quite lines up with the poster’s emotional pushback — that mismatch itself, more than any real empathy, is what makes the exchange worth reading.

  • Wave of Hello! Project Graduates Losing Their Fans After Leaving — 5ch: “Airi Suzuki Is the Only One Who’s Kept Her Popularity”

There’s been debate on 5ch’s Hello!Project board over how much popularity former Hello!Project members retain after graduating. The thread cited a list of X (Twitter) follower counts — Haruka Kudo with 124,000, Yuka Nihei with 79,000, and Karin Miyamoto with 73,000 — pointing out that popularity within a group doesn’t necessarily translate into solo drawing power. The rare exception named was Airi Suzuki, who reportedly inherited her group’s entire fanbase when it disbanded and got off to a strong start on her own, while posters repeatedly noted that other graduates are struggling just to fill livehouse venues.

    Re: #99
That's just how it goes for all the OGs

Background and key points of this discussion

In Hello!Project, it’s common for a group to keep going even after an individual member graduates from it, which means that, as this thread shows, even members who once filled huge venues to capacity while active get re-evaluated purely on their own solo drawing power once they leave. It’s worth noting that the X (Twitter) follower figures cited in the thread come from an anonymous poster’s own tally and aren’t officially confirmed numbers. Opinions were split on how to read Airi Suzuki’s case: some argued that because her group disbanded, its fanbase never got divided and instead consolidated around her, while others pointed out that she actually struggled to build an audience early on. What most posters agreed on was a more structural point — that fans are often supporting the group as a framework rather than the individual member, which makes it easy for them to shift their support to a group’s current members the moment someone graduates.

  • Government Pours ¥616 Billion Into Gasoline Subsidies — 5ch Fires Back: ‘But Oil Wholesalers Are Posting Record Profits’

On September 1, the government approved a cabinet decision to spend ¥616 billion from reserve funds in the FY2026 budget. Of that, ¥613.6 billion will go toward subsidies that hold down the price of gasoline and other fuels, keeping the nationwide average retail price of regular gasoline at around ¥170 per liter. On 5ch, threads featured back-and-forth confirming that the money comes from taxpayers, frustration that major oil wholesalers are posting their highest net profits in a decade amid Middle East tensions, and pointed comparisons to other countries, where it’s more common to let prices rise with the market and instead support struggling households through targeted payments — leaving commenters split on whether the subsidy makes sense.

The current price target — keeping the nationwide average retail price of regular gasoline at around ¥170 per liter — will be maintained, easing the burden on households and businesses.

Kerosene prices are insane right now

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The gasoline subsidy program began in 2022 as a response to soaring crude oil prices and has been repeatedly extended since. Reserve funds are used because they allow spending to be mobilized quickly without Diet deliberation, though the lack of transparency around how the money is spent has repeatedly been raised as an issue in the Diet. Because the subsidy works by suppressing wholesale prices, with payments flowing through the major oil wholesalers, price suppression and rising wholesaler profits tend to happen together by design — which is the root of the ‘only the wholesalers are winning’ criticism seen in the thread. Meanwhile, most countries elsewhere let gasoline prices float with the market and support struggling households through targeted measures like cash payments, making Japan’s approach of having the government hold prices down long-term relatively unusual by international standards. That said, a subsidy alone can’t fully absorb swings from exchange rates or crude oil prices, and the reserve funds paying for it are themselves limited — points not addressed in either the original article or the thread discussion.

  • DF’s John Linneman: “Third Parties Furious Over Sony Killing Discs — Physical Sales Are Most of Their Profit”

Digital Foundry’s John Linneman has revealed that third-party publishers and developers harbor strong dissatisfaction with Sony’s push toward a “discless” future. According to Linneman, many of these companies earn substantial profits from physical disc sales, with some even generating the majority of their revenue from them. In the thread, users pushed back with claims that “90% of PS sales are digital,” while others shared information noting that sales reports for indie developers can be delayed by up to a month, sparking a divided debate over whether abandoning physical media is really the right direction for the industry.

Sure, returns exist, but basically the money comes in the moment it's shipped to the distributor.
Though I guess you'd have to set aside some funds in reserve for returns.
    105AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:11
    Re: #89
That's not actually how the Western returns-based system works.

The initial deal is basically asking the store to give you shelf space—you don't get paid just for placing the product there.
When the store sells a unit, they keep their "cut," and
the remainder gets paid to the publisher each time, as it sells.

So a "return" just means "pulling the product off the shelf"—no money actually changes hands at that point.

It's closer to how download-card sales work in Japan.

There's no cost to stock the cards, and the publisher just gets paid, minus a fee, for whatever actually sells.
    93AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:04
If there had been some kind of push to promote digital sales—like Nintendo's "Katachike" download vouchers, or the DS Station kiosks back in the DS era—and digital sales grew as a result, sure, that'd make sense.
But with none of that happening at all, the idea that PlayStation alone shifted this drastically toward digital? It's obviously not credible.
    98AnonymousSep 1, 2026 13:06
    Re: #93
If anything, PlayStation doesn't even allow codes to be sold through outside retailers—its digital distribution channels are actually pretty narrow.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

For background, the PS5 has sold both digital-only and disc-drive models side by side since launch, and this topic is a reaction to the broader industry direction of “further movement toward a discless future.” Where the thread’s opinions split was over how to assess the actual digital sales ratio—against the claim that “90% of PS sales are digital,” some pushed back by pointing out that the figure is inflated by demos and free monthly titles. Another point of contention is the practical difference between physical copies, which get paid out the moment they’re shipped to distributors, versus digital sales, where reporting and payment reportedly lag by up to a month—a difference tied up with North America’s returns system and Europe’s shelf-space contract structures, making it something that can’t be captured by a simple sales comparison. Opinions on Digital Foundry’s neutrality were mixed, and since some of the thread’s posts include baseless speculation, they shouldn’t be taken at face value as fact. In compiling this article, posts containing unfounded bribery accusations against real companies or mockery targeting specific groups were excluded.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “DF’s John: “It’s true that third parties are unhappy about PlayStation discontinuing discs—in reality, physical sales make up the bulk of their profit.””

  • VIVANT Season 2 Divides Fans: Questions Swirl Over AI Character and Sakai Masato’s Triple Role

A 5channel thread discussing Season 2 of the TBS drama “VIVANT,” the sequel currently airing, has been split between praise and criticism. The main flashpoint is the show’s AI character, with critics calling its emotional expressions “off-putting” and dismissing it as “just a prop to get viewers theorizing,” while defenders argue it would actually be more unnatural for a modern intelligence agency not to use AI at all. Opinions also diverged over Sakai Masato taking on three roles and the drama’s long two-cour (roughly six-month) run, with the thread split between viewers wanting something simple and easy to follow and those who enjoy a show built for deep analysis.

Background and Key Points of Debate

VIVANT was a massive hit TBS drama starring Sakai Masato in 2023, and Season 2 began airing to high anticipation as its sequel. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points. The first is whether the AI character works: defenders argued it would be unnatural for a modern intelligence agency not to use AI, while detractors pushed back that its emotional expressions are unpleasant and that it’s little more than a prop to fuel viewer theorizing. The second is a broader backlash against “theorizing culture” itself, with many expressing fatigue at shows built around social-media puzzle-solving contests. Commenters also flagged Sakai Masato’s triple role, the drama’s long two-cour (six-month) run, and the limited screen time given to popular actors like Matsuzaka Tori. Posts also noted that the broadcast runs through around January of next year, with a feature film reportedly also in the works, underscoring the scale of the franchise. Some posts in the thread also mocked cast members’ appearances or personal lives, but those have been excluded here since they can’t be verified as fact.

  • “Super Real Mahjong: Venus Returns” Tops Japan’s Steam Sales Chart for 5 Straight Days

ILLUMINATION’s Super Real Mahjong: Venus Returns topped Japan’s domestic Steam sales chart for a 5th consecutive day as of September 1, according to a report by gamebiz.jp, sparking discussion on 5channel’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. While some expressed surprise that a mahjong-themed title could keep selling this well, opinions split over its modest 49th-place global ranking — some called it proof of how small the Japanese market is, while others argued it simply reflects a lack of competition from other titles.

As of 9:54 AM on September 1, ILLUMINATION’s Super Real Mahjong: Venus Returns holds the #1 spot on the domestic Steam sales chart — its 5th straight day at the top. While hard sales data is limited, this could arguably be one of the standout success stories in the industry’s long history.

    Re: #132
You were the one raging since launch day about how badly you wanted to play it, saying this is exactly the game PSVR2 needed.

Background and key points of the discussion

Steam’s domestic sales charts don’t publish actual unit-sales figures, so the “roughly 10,000 units worldwide” number floated in the thread is a user estimate, not official data. Opinions in the thread split over why a #1 domestic ranking translates to only 49th place globally: some saw it as evidence that the Japanese market is small, while others argued it simply means nothing else is selling well, or that different countries want different genres. Worth noting: strip-mahjong games are a long-established genre in Japan but largely unfamiliar overseas, so the ranking gap alone doesn’t straightforwardly reflect relative market size — a nuance readers may easily miss. This article also omits some exchanges involving sexual content and age-related remarks.

  • GPU Prices Keep Climbing — 5ch: “Don’t Trust the Bad-Timing Guy”

A thread that started from the classic nanJ joke — every time someone says “I want a PC,” someone replies “the timing’s bad” — before turning into a real discussion about GPU prices. Some users say the RTX 5070 Ti has gone from ¥150,000 to over ¥200,000, while others report buying one for ¥80,000–¥100,000-something, highlighting just how much price varies depending on when you bought. The talk also turned to people who built new PCs to play Monster Hunter Wilds at launch — at the time they were mocked for “wasting money on a trash game,” but in hindsight many say the timing worked out great. Posters also pointed to AI-driven demand pushing up parts prices and the used market collapsing after Windows 10 support ended, with opinions split on whether prices will come back down.

    Re: #96
It used to be "load up on more RAM than you need, just in case," but now it's at the point where there's no such thing as too much 🙄

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The continued rise in GPU prices stems from a semiconductor and memory crunch driven by surging demand for generative AI. Posters in the thread floated theories like “AI companies have bought up huge numbers of Macs for AI use” and “AI is a bubble, but since production itself has already shrunk, prices will stay high even after it pops” — opinions were split between optimism and pessimism about a future price drop. Windows 10 support also ended in October 2025, and the thread’s comment that “the dirt-cheap used PCs disappeared once Win10 support ended” reflects that. The bottom falling out of the used market is one reason people keep saying “the timing is bad” right now. One thing readers might easily misread is that this talk of prices and shortages is based on individual anecdotes and gut feelings about the market, not official statistics. Still, the recurring story that “people who bought PCs for the Monster Hunter Wilds launch ended up coming out ahead” keeps getting repeated as a reminder that waiting longer doesn’t always pay off — making it a nice provocation for the ongoing debate about when to buy a PC.

In the government bond market on the 1st, the yield on the newly issued 10-year bond — the benchmark for long-term interest rates — briefly rose to 2.985%. According to Japan Bond Trading Co., that’s the highest level in roughly 30 years, since it hit 3% in October 1996. On 5ch threads, opinions split between those who see this as a normalization toward “a world with real interest rates” and those worried about ballooning interest payments as government spending continues to outpace tax revenue. Differences between Japanese and U.S. monetary policy, and comparisons with Japan’s fiscal situation back in 1985, also came up.

The Biden administration's COVID response sparked inflation and drove up interest rates. The Kishida government sat on its hands, but did raise rates in 2024. The market expected the BOJ to push a bit harder for yen strength, but was disappointed, and the yen's been on a weakening trend since 2025.

Overheated AI investment in the U.S. also pulled money from around the world into America, which contributed to a stronger dollar.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The newly issued 10-year JGB yield climbing to 2.985% marks the highest level in roughly 30 years, since October 1996. Compared to back then, Japan’s outstanding public debt has grown enormously, so even at the same yield level, the weight of interest payments is completely different. On the thread, opinions split between those who framed the return to “a world with real interest rates” as a normalization, and those worried about ballooning interest payments amid a fiscal situation where spending far outpaces tax revenue. Views were also divided over the Takaichi administration’s economic policy and the merits of past monetary easing, with some attributing the rate rise to structural factors predating the change in government, and others tying it to the current administration’s statements and policies. Some posts compared this to the U.S. rate-hike cycle, but differences in underlying conditions — such as inflation targets and social security systems — weren’t fully addressed in the replies.

By the way, this thing hit #9 in Amazon’s Game Fan Books category — plenty of victims out there
    65AnonymousSep 1, 2026 06:53
    Re: #3
Are there really that many people who’d fall for something this obviously AI-made?
    FromSoft fanboys, I swear…
    4AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:15
“Game Fan Book” = scam dōjin book (self-published fan work)
    7AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:23
There was a GIGAZINE article about AI-generated fake strategy guides for unreleased games showing up on Amazon
This is probably one of those
    100AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:38
    Re: #7
    Ah, I see 🫥
    9AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:24
    What is this lol
There’s strategy info all over the internet for free
Guess he really loves physical copies
    10AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:25
This is one of those obviously-AI ones on Amazon, right?
    They’re all over different games
Double shock — that someone actually bought it, and that it was made into an actual book at all
    11AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:25
Reminds me of that old Dragon Quest III strategy guide lol
    12AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:26
Might as well have just asked ChatGPT lmao
    14AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:29
You could tell it was junk just from the product page — this isn’t even a landmine
If it was ¥4000 as a joke buy it’d have been a good purchase I guess, whatever
If someone genuinely got scammed, they should be blaming Amazon
The ones who approve this stuff and make money while staying hands-off are the real villains here
    15AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:32
    Huh

    >Amazon Paperback is a service that lets you publish paper books that get printed and bound on demand after an order comes in.
    91AnonymousSep 1, 2026 09:11
    Re: #15
I wouldn’t buy it either, but why would you buy some sketchy book from a random no-name publisher instead of an official Dengeki guide from a proper publisher? (Dengeki is a well-known Japanese game-guide publisher)
    16AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:32
Switch 2 users are getting way too much flak here
    17AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:33
An unofficial mystery strategy guide with no official backing, huh lol
    Kind of nostalgic, honestly
    18AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:36
Just from the cover it looks like a legit strategy guide
    20AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:38
    Re: #18
Even the kanji in the main text at the bottom left isn’t right — you think this looks legit?
    32AnonymousSep 1, 2026 05:02
    Re: #18
    The cover is obviously AI-generated
It doesn’t look like a proper strategy guide to me
    19AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:38
No art or photos at all? Yeah, that’s straight-up garbage…
    21AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:39
This kind of AI strategy guide made waves during the Bananza thing too, didn’t it
Can’t believe people actually buy these
    22AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:39
It’s kind of sad that someone who actually bought it left a one-star review
    23AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:40
Even the Erdtree looks totally off if you look closely. Poor guy
    24AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:43
    A self-published AI book, huh
Crazy that this kind of thing exists
    25AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:43
Proper strategy guides these days normally run about ¥3000 anyway
So people probably think ‘a bit pricey, but I guess that’s normal’ and don’t question it
    28AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:51
300 pages of pure text is impressive in its own way
Could almost be fun to buy just the book without the game and try to imagine what it’s like
    29AnonymousSep 1, 2026 04:56
    Re: #28
It’s AI, so it’s probably riddled with misinformation
    34AnonymousSep 1, 2026 05:08
Why does Amazon sell nothing but garbage? If they ran things properly their dominance wouldn’t even be in question, but I guess selling junk is just more profitable
I only use Yodobashi now (a major Japanese electronics/retail chain)
    37AnonymousSep 1, 2026 05:18
Even if the content is entirely AI-written, printing a 300-page book still costs a fair amount, doesn’t it
    43AnonymousSep 1, 2026 05:25
    Re: #37
Amazon automatically prints and binds each copy on demand once an order comes in
The seller just generates it with AI and submits the digital file
    55AnonymousSep 1, 2026 06:12
I mean, these days you can just pull up guides on the internet whenever you need them, that’s plenty
    58AnonymousSep 1, 2026 06:22
    Re: #55
Lately all you find are content-less affiliate-copy articles, so I kind of get the impulse to buy a strategy guide even one released back when the game was still getting updates
    56AnonymousSep 1, 2026 06:14
Reminds me of that ‘Dorakue’ strategy guide (slang for Dragon Quest)
    57AnonymousSep 1, 2026 06:19
Not sure if they got dogpiled, but they deleted the post, locked their account, and ran 🪤
    59AnonymousSep 1, 2026 06:23
    Re: #57
What… they didn’t even do anything wrong
    74AnonymousSep 1, 2026 07:18
It’s not that strange that people still buy strategy guides
Generative AI lies, and strategy sites have terrible, hard-to-navigate designs
    88AnonymousSep 1, 2026 08:38
    Re: #74
And the result is buying an AI-generated strategy guide — what a cautionary tale lol
Real bookstores are still needed after all

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Amazon has a “paperback” self-publishing feature that lets individuals publish books without going through a publisher’s review process; each time an order comes in, Amazon prints and binds a single copy on its end. Because sellers only need to submit a digital manuscript, it’s technically possible to turn AI-generated text straight into a sellable book, and this kind of “AI-made strategy guide” for unreleased or already-released games has been pointed out for other titles in the past as well. In the thread, one point of debate was how little way there is to distinguish an official strategy guide put out by a publisher like Dengeki from one of these unofficial books before buying it. The cover design alone can easily be mistaken for an official guide, and it was noted that enough people bought this one for it to place near the top of game-related sales rankings. Some also pointed out that, given the declining usability of strategy websites and dissatisfaction with the accuracy of generative-AI chat answers, demand for physical strategy guides still remains strong.
