  • Bunshun: ‘Draft-1 Pitcher Assaulted a Woman’ → Revealed to Be SoftBank’s Taito Murakami

Weekly Bunshun’s report that “a first-round draft pick pitcher assaulted a woman” became a hot topic on the NanJ board (“Everything Live Broadcast,” a well-known 5channel sports-chat forum). The article itself didn’t name the player, but posters pieced together fragments of information and worked out it was Taito Murakami — the pitcher SoftBank picked first overall in the 2024 draft straight out of high school, now in his second pro year. Later in the thread, a link to TBS-affiliated news coverage was shared, bringing further developments. The debate split between those questioning the individual player’s character and those questioning the team’s training and oversight given how many players it manages, with several names of other former top draft picks from the same generation who’d been cut over scandals or injuries also coming up.

    Yes.

    Wait, what?
    There it is

Background and Key Points of This Story

This story originated with Weekly Bunshun’s report that “a first-round draft pick pitcher assaulted a woman.” The Bunshun article itself withheld the player’s name, but thread posters used circumstantial evidence to identify him as Taito Murakami, SoftBank’s 2024 first-round pick now in his second year, and later in the thread a link to TBS-affiliated coverage was shared with further factual updates. Worth noting: at the time of Bunshun’s report, this was still at the “allegation” stage — no criminal proceedings or official team statement had confirmed the details. Some posts in the thread used language like “attempted murder,” but that’s posters’ own speculation, not something the reporting itself confirmed about the actual charges. The debate split between whether responsibility lies with the 19-year-old player himself or with the team’s training system given how many players it manages, with more posts leaning toward the latter. Several other former top draft picks from the same generation who were cut over scandals or injuries came up repeatedly, reflecting a broader distrust of how NPB teams develop young players.

  • Pokémon Movie ‘Pokémon: Wildcard’ to Be Produced by Sony-Owned CloverWorks

On August 31, The Pokémon Company announced a new movie, “Pokémon: Wildcard,” based on the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It’s slated for release in 2027, with animation production handled by CloverWorks, a studio under Sony Music-affiliated Aniplex. The director is Katsuhiko Kitada, with character designs by Akemi Hayashi. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, the fact that a Sony-affiliated company is producing Nintendo IP sparked back-and-forth between posters arguing “Nintendo is basically acting like a third-party studio now” and others countering “it’s just a subcontracting job” — with some posts also mixing up PlayStation maker Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) with the Sony Music group.

Wait, are they still backing it?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

CloverWorks is an animation studio under Sony Music-affiliated Aniplex, and it’s the studio handling production of “Pokémon: Wildcard.” In the thread, many posts confused Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), which operates PlayStation, with the Sony Music group that owns CloverWorks — treating them as the same company; unverified claims of an “SIE withdrawal” circulated without any clear basis. Another recurring thread was the history of Sony Music setting up (and later dissolving) a joint venture to support Pocketpair’s “Palworld,” fueling sarcastic remarks like “they got dumped” and “outside work for cash.” Opinions split between those arguing that Sony-affiliated studios producing Nintendo IP shows “Nintendo turning into a third party,” and those countering that “it’s just a subcontracted job.” Note that this thread shows how easily confusion spreads between several separate companies under the Sony umbrella (SIE, Sony Music, Aniplex), and as of this report there is no information confirming SIE has withdrawn from the Pokémon movie business.

  • Game Boy: ‘Without Pokémon, It’d Be on Par with the WonderSwan’ — 5ch Debates

A post asking, “If it weren’t for Pokémon, wouldn’t the Game Boy just be rated on par with the WonderSwan?” sparked a wide-ranging debate on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board. The Game Boy launched in 1989, while Pokémon Red/Green didn’t arrive until 1996 — leaving a seven-year gap. Opinions split over how to read that gap: some argued “it held up fine thanks to Tetris and Mario,” while others countered that “before Pokémon it was a plain handheld with no major hits.” Many posters backed up their arguments with actual million-seller sales figures, and the discussion also expanded into comparisons with the PlayStation’s popularity at the time.

You really are the real deal, huh.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Game Boy launched in 1989, and Pokémon Red/Green didn’t arrive until 1996 — a genuine seven-year gap. Early titles like Tetris and Super Mario Land carried the console through that stretch; the million-seller list shared in the thread shows Tetris at 4.24 million units and Super Mario Land at 4.19 million, proving there was already a solid sales base before Pokémon. The debate split between the view that “without Pokémon it would’ve been just a puzzle-only machine with no major hits” and the counter-argument that “games like Kirby and SaGa already had a loyal following” — the latter camp pointing to titles that stayed popular even without hitting the million mark. There’s also testimony that when Pokémon launched, the PlayStation was just starting to take off in the home console space, and handhelds in general were seen as a bit of an afterthought — meaning Pokémon’s success wasn’t just a sequel hit, but arguably rescued a fading platform at the edge of the ring. This timeline isn’t obvious from the article alone, so it’s included here for context.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Would the Game Boy only be rated on par with the WonderSwan if it weren’t for Pokémon?“.

  • 30% of Unmarried Young People Say ‘I Don’t Plan to Marry’ — Satoko Ito: ‘Shocking’; 5ch Reacts: ‘How Are You Supposed to Start a Family on ¥200,000 Rent?’

Japan’s Children and Families Agency conducted its first large-scale survey of young people, finding that roughly one in three unmarried respondents said they “have no intention of getting married.” Reacting to the results on TBS’s “Hiruobi,” freelance announcer Satoko Ito called the finding “shocking,” adding, “Japan’s population can only keep shrinking.” On 5ch, commenters split between blaming a lack of financial breathing room — citing rent and stagnant real wages — and pointing to a shift in values where marriage itself is no longer seen as worthwhile, with the thread divided over which factor is the true root cause.

As young people show declining interest in marriage, Satoko Ito says: “Shocking. Japan’s population can only keep shrinking”

Freelance announcer Satoko Ito appeared on TBS’s “Hiruobi” (weekdays at 10:25 a.m.) on the 2nd.

She commented that it was “shocking” that, according to the Children and Families Agency’s first large-scale survey of young people, roughly one in three unmarried young people said they “have no intention of getting married.”

There was a show explaining that, in a 100-year lifespan, being forced to spend the rest of your life with someone you just happened to fall for during a mere 2-3 years in your 20s goes against the natural order — it's simply unreasonable.

The conclusion was: 'It only works if you pile patience on patience, endurance on endurance, give up your freedom, and throw away a lot of richness in life — money, time, and peace of mind.'

It also said your unhappiness index shoots up instantly if you're supporting an unemployed partner, like a stay-at-home wife.
It's true that after 10 years, most married couples have lost their love for each other.
A life spent gritting your teeth and living together forever while irritated might be the unhappiest life of all.

Re: #17 Every year 500,000 couples get married while 200,000 divorce, but that 40% who divorce are never truly unhappy — they get a chance to start over. The truly unhappiest people aren't the divorced or the unmarried — it's married couples whose home life has completely fallen apart but who won't divorce because they're worried about appearances. There's just no benefit to marriage anymore, especially for women. If you can support yourself, there's zero upside to spending every day with some mediocre Japanese guy. In the old days, women's life plans were effectively restricted, so they had no choice but to pair up.

For the people at the top who use labor, a high-birthrate society is better for them. For the people being used, fewer kids means less competition, which is better. Wanting more kids is, if anything, the logic of the ruling class.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Children and Families Agency’s survey marks the government’s first attempt to grasp young people’s views on marriage on a large scale, and is positioned as baseline data for future measures to address the declining birthrate. In the thread, both economic factors — “rent is too high,” “real wages have fallen since 40 years ago” — and shifting values — “there’s no benefit to marriage,” “I don’t want to lose my freedom” — were cited as causes, though it’s easy to overlook that these two explanations aren’t mutually exclusive and can coexist. Comments citing divorce statistics or personal experience were also prominent, but these reflect individual impressions rather than the survey data itself, and should be read separately from the actual findings.

  • Sony Launches New Wired Earbuds, 5ch Reacts: “Charging Them Every Time Is Such a Hassle”

A thread popped up on 5ch’s “Nanide Jikkyo G” board about Sony releasing a new wired earbud model, of all things, at this point in time. With wireless earbuds having been the mainstream choice for a long while now, wired-earbud loyalists piled on with complaints about wireless — “charging is a pain,” “too easy to lose.” At the same time, posters pointed out the practical wall of “my phone doesn’t even have a jack,” and others praised the convenience of noise-canceling and touch controls, leaving opinions split on which is actually better. There was also a reply asking for ASMR-listening recommendations, showing that the right pick really depends on what you’re using it for.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Fully wireless earbuds spread rapidly after AirPods hit the market, and they’re now the mainstay product on store shelves. At the same time, the hassle of charging and how easy they are to lose have been weak points pointed out since they first appeared, and this thread saw those same complaints repeated. Wired earbuds don’t need power and are harder to lose, but it’s easy to overlook the physical constraint that many modern smartphones have dropped the headphone jack entirely, meaning you can’t even plug them in in the first place. There was also a reply asking for ASMR-listening recommendations, which drew comments noting that the reputation of certain enthusiast-oriented brands has shifted — a sign that the right choice really depends on use case and personal taste. Note that the latter half of the thread veers off into arguments between posters, so this article focuses on and excerpts the parts relevant to choosing earbuds.

  • Sakamoto Aoka: “I Want to Join OCHA NORMA” — 5ch: “No Trainee Ever Says She Doesn’t Want In”

Reactions spread across 5ch after Hello! Project staff member “Kyururun” said that trainee Sakamoto Aoka wants to join OCHA NORMA. Some argued that when trainees are asked which group they’d like to join, they’re just giving a diplomatic non-answer — but others pointed out past cases where trainees who publicly stated their preference really were placed in that very group, splitting opinion on how much weight to give the comment. The thread also touched on the status of other trainees like Nemoto Tsubaki, and the recurring pattern of the agency making personnel decisions that defy fan predictions.

Tashiro's Kanagawa slot is open, so Sakamoto becomes a strong candidate for OCHA.
But the moment you start pushing the "hometown theory," they'll do the opposite and throw in Yoshida from Tokyo or Hattori from Aichi instead.
Yet if nobody pushes the hometown theory, the "all different hometowns" concept just stays intact on its own.

Hello! Project trainee Goto Hana: "I want to join ANGERME"
    https://kizuna.5ch.io/test/read.cgi/morningcoffee/1672119914/

    Background and Key Points

OCHA NORMA is a group that has grown by welcoming new members from Hello! Project’s trainee pool, and Sakamoto Aoka is currently active as a trainee. When trainees are asked which group they’d like to join, there’s a tendency to give an inoffensive answer that won’t ruffle feathers — as replies 2 and 9 point out, such statements are hard to take entirely at face value. On the other hand, as reply 18 notes with examples like Hashisako, Ishiyama, Goto, and Hayashi, there are multiple cases of members who publicly stated their desired group before actually joining it, so it can’t simply be dismissed as diplomatic small talk either. The thread also raised the recurring pattern of the agency making personnel decisions that go against fan predictions, reinforcing the view that Sakamoto’s comment doesn’t necessarily guarantee she’ll end up in OCHA NORMA. Note that any comments in the thread naming real staff members in connection with personnel authority are unverified fan speculation.

  • Is Your 50s the “Halfway Point of Life”? Forum Reacts to Where the Baby Boomer Juniors Are Now

A Yahoo! News article about the lives of people in their early 50s from the “Baby Boomer Junior” generation sparked discussion on 5ch’s News Express+ board. The original article questioned whether “halfway point of life” is really the right way to describe this generation, and the thread filled up with comments pointing out a mismatch in how people perceive age, from “halfway point? more like already elderly” to “40-45 is the real halfway point.” At the same time, many posters shared stories of their 80-something parents still energetically playing golf or hiking, highlighting a disconnect between the hardships of the Employment Ice Age and the lived reality of today’s increasing longevity. Some comments also noted how many Baby Boomer Juniors never had children, and the generational discussion expanded to cover economics, health, and the declining birth rate.

Inside your body, decline starts once you're past 30, and once you're past 50, biologically speaking, a doctor told me you could drop dead anytime and it wouldn't be strange.
For example, you might think hardening only affects the arteries, but the heart valves also stiffen, deform, and stop closing properly.
    The person just doesn't notice.
Apparently it's becoming really common now — if you catch it while you're still young, they swap it out for an artificial valve on the operating table.
Cancer and stroke rates go up too.

    Having your own standards.

    Background and Points of Debate

The Baby Boomer Juniors are generally defined as those born between 1971 and 1974, a generation whose job-hunting years overlapped with the so-called Employment Ice Age. What split opinion in this thread was the validity of the phrase “halfway point of life” — some see the 50s as still short of the halfway mark given today’s longer life expectancy, while many others felt that declining physical strength and health made it feel like “effectively old age.” Also notable, though hard to capture from the article alone, was the gap between this generation’s distinct experience of Ice Age-era low wages and harsh working conditions, and the sight of their own parents, now in their 80s, still leading active lives. It’s worth noting that while the Baby Boomer Junior and Employment Ice Age generations largely overlap, they aren’t strictly identical, and some posters in the thread pointed out that distinction.

  • Palworld’s Official Manga Drawn by Nagano — 5ch: ‘The Storytelling Is Dead’

The official Palworld account published a manga drawn in a style resembling manga artist Nagano (creator of Chiikawa), sparking a stir on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Thread posters were split on whether Nagano himself actually drew it or whether it was staff (or even AI) imitating his style, and plenty piled on with sarcasm given Palworld’s long history of being accused of ripping off Pokémon. Since Nintendo and Palworld developer Pocketpair are also locked in a patent lawsuit, several reactions referenced that ongoing legal context too.

MIZOGUCHIIII WINSU~ (stylized garbled katakana mimicking a broken-English arcade announcer shouting "Mizoguchi wins!")

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Ever since Palworld’s 2024 launch, its monster designs have drawn comparisons to Pokémon, and that September Nintendo actually sued Palworld developer Pocketpair for patent infringement — so there is a real, ongoing legal conflict between the two companies. This manga was largely received through that lens of “ripoff” criticism. The thread was split mainly over whether the manga was genuinely drawn by Nagano himself or was an imitation made to resemble his style, and no official confirmation either way turned up within the thread. Readers might easily mistake this for a real collaboration with Chiikawa or something Nintendo-sanctioned, but nothing in the thread’s discussion confirms it was a formal collaboration.

As predictions for NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen (the Red and White Song Battle) heat up on X (formerly Twitter) and elsewhere, a 5ch thread turned its attention to how “every prediction out there seems to include Juice=Juice.” With =LOVE, CUTIE STREET, and Nogizaka46 treated as near-certain picks, the question became whether Juice=Juice would claim one of the remaining slots. The general public's take on ANGERME is basically 'Who? Never heard of them'

    Background and Key Points

NHK doesn’t officially announce the Kohaku lineup until December each year, so predictions circulating on social media in September are nothing more than fan speculation. The thread zeroed in on two things: Juice=Juice’s signature song ‘Moré! Mi Amore’ has picked up name recognition beyond idol fandom, even getting name-checked by a baseball commentator and a politician, and the fact that Hello! Project has several groups competing for attention at once. With Morning Musume。marking its 30th anniversary next year, some see the agency as wanting to prioritize its flagship group’s appearance, while Juice=Juice has racked up hit songs of its own in recent years — leaving fans divided over which group to back. The debate was further fueled by the fact that groups from other agencies, like =LOVE and CUTIE STREET, are already seen as near-certain to appear. Note that the actual selection criteria and number of slots are never made public, so there’s no guarantee any of these social media predictions will pan out.

  • “Drinking Out 5 Nights a Week Plus a Pack of Cigarettes a Day” Adds Up to ¥46 Million Over 30 Years — FP’s Estimate Sparks Mixed Reactions on 5ch

An article introducing a financial planner’s estimate that “going out drinking five nights a week and smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years adds up to roughly ¥46 million” became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Express+ board. Centered on the case of a single man in his 50s who bar-hops every night at standing bars in Shimbashi, the piece asks whether people should rethink their spending on alcohol and cigarettes as part of retirement planning. On the thread, many criticized the premise — ¥5,000 per outing, five times a week — as wildly exaggerated, while others pointed out the risk that seniors struggle to rent apartments, or noted that quitting drinking and smoking would just shift the spending to other hobbies. Opinions were split over the assumptions behind the calculation.

Quit drinking and smoking and you could “build a house” or “buy a Mercedes” — a line smokers and drinkers alike are sick of hearing. They fire back with “What’s a life without booze and cigarettes,” “It’s essential downtime for earning a living,” or “Quitting would just stress me out and be worse for my health.” But when you actually put a number on these costs, the reality is no laughing matter. So what should people do about drinking and smoking costs as they plan for retirement? We asked financial planner (FP) Chikako Uehara.

[Case Study] Bar-hopping through Shimbashi’s izakaya row, a single man pushing 50 realizes he’s drinking away ¥100,000 a month

“To blow off steam from work, I head straight to a standing bar in Shimbashi almost every night after work. Chatting with the regulars is fun, so I end up hopping to a second and third place. Standing bars are cheap per round, but I probably spend around ¥5,000 a day. I smoke along with the drinking too, so it might add up to quite a sum (laughs).”

Landlords won't rent to old people
it's a hassle if you die in the room
and you'll get kicked out even from an apartment you've lived in for years

A coroner told me smokers' lungs turn pitch black, swollen, and full of holes
    75AnonymousSep 2, 2026 23:56
    Re: #70
Even if my lungs turn black, my heart's still clean, so I'm fine

They say if a man marries a so-called "agemanko" (a woman believed to bring her husband good luck), he can live a life of leisure forever
    82AnonymousSep 2, 2026 23:59
One month smoke-free. It's especially rough right after eating.
Even when I'm full I have to keep eating just to cope.
Feels like I'm gonna end up with some other illness instead.

Just give up on that pointless quitting already

My old boss quit and it stuck, but he said it took 2 years to feel settled without cigarettes.
You've still got a ways to go. Though I've never smoked so I wouldn't really know.

    Re: #82
I've heard that smoking suppresses your appetite, so when you quit your sense of taste changes, your eating shoots up, and you start gaining weight
    90AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:01
If you're gonna smoke, at least switch to an e-cigarette like IQOS, regular paper cigarettes just stink
    91AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:03
    Re: #90
No thanks, real cigarettes have gotta be rolled paper

Yeah it dirties up the room too
my parents and siblings were heavy smokers so back home the wallpaper, the exhaust fan, the dust — it was all brown and sticky

No drinking, no smoking, single in your 50s owning a one-room condo — is that a life of killing time with free mobile games every night since your 20s?
I get that drinking out 5 nights a week until your 50s makes marriage impossible, but if you've got nothing else you want to do and you're not out drinking, wouldn't you just be suicidal? If the guy himself is having fun doing it, then there's nothing wrong with it.

I bought a game called Skyrim on sale ages ago and fell into the mod rabbit hole, I've sunk at least 2000 hours into it lol
Lately I've finally gotten a bit tired of it and stepped away, but I might get hooked again once I forget about it lol

Booze and cigarettes as your idea of entertainment?
What are you, some Showa-era old man?
    Everyone's hobbies are different
some people get into bonsai, some get into keeping reptiles, some make music with DTM software, some play instruments, some do YouTube, some love train trips, some love movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime — it's all over the map.
Booze, cigarettes, cars, women, gambling —
way better than being some Showa-era trash who thinks that stuff is what life's about
    130AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:21
A ¥5,000 drinking session, five times a week, starting at age 20
And calculating cigarettes at today's ¥600 price even for 30 years ago when they cost ¥200

The premise is just way too sloppy
    What a garbage fantasy article

It's annoying when people actually believe this stuff and look down on you for it
    146AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:31
Is this like saying if you add up all the rent you've paid, you could've bought a house?
    151AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:34
    Re: #146
Hmm, kind of, kind of not

You could say this about literally anything
And if you gave up everything, you'd probably end up so empty you'd wonder what the point of living even is
    157AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:37
    Re: #146
I get the risk that it gets harder to rent once you're older,
but that doesn't mean buying some decades-old used condo out in the countryside is the answer either.
And a pricey Tokyo condo running into the hundreds of millions of yen is way too expensive.
For now I'll just make do with UR housing (public rental housing) or the housing safety net program.

    "I don't drink or smoke,
but I love spending on my favorite idol/character and on the sex industry,
and I love gambling too" — there's a lot of people like that

I don't drink, smoke, or gamble,
but I love porn and spend money on that kind of stuff
guess that's just how it goes

    Re: #150
    For me it's just cigarettes.
Aside from a few social drinks a year, I haven't really drunk in 15 years,
and I only went to a brothel twice, back in my 20s.

But for some reason cigarettes are the one thing I can't quit.
    162AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:43
Took out a ¥60 million mortgage in my 20s, drink and smoke every day, and have 3 kids, but somehow it's all working out.
Health checkups all clear, I jog 6km twice a month. My one joy is a sauna trip every 2-3 months.
Only 20 more years to grit through. Hang in there, me. I refuse to die before I see my grandkids.
    173AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:48
    Re: #162
Younger generations are increasingly losing their illusions about marriage too,
so maybe all 3 of your kids will say marriage is dumb and never tie the knot lol

Hey old man who never smoked, did you manage to buy that Mercedes?
    169AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:46
    Re: #164
I managed to buy a used condo in central Tokyo.
If I sold it now I'd get back what I paid, maybe even a bit more.
Meaning 20 years of housing basically came free.
Though I won't actually sell it since then I'd have nowhere to live.
    167AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:45
I go to a soapland (brothel) three times a week — if I'd held back, could I have bought a house?
    172AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:48
    Re: #167
That one you could seriously buy a house with
    175AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:53
    Switched to American Spirit
and now I only go through a pack every 4 days
    it's ¥440 for a pack of 14
comes out to about ¥3,000 a month, so no house is getting built off that
    183AnonymousSep 3, 2026 00:57
It's not just about the direct cost of buying alcohol and cigarettes
factor in the lifestyle diseases they cause and the treatment costs, and you're wasting over ¥100 million over 30 years
    Get it?
Quitting alcohol and cigarettes doesn't just make you healthy, it can make you a multimillionaire

    Background and Points of Debate

The “quit and you could build a house” style of calculation is a simple projection that assumes every yen saved by quitting alcohol and cigarettes would automatically go straight into savings — and commenters on the thread pushed back, noting that in reality the money would likely just shift to other hobbies like gaming, fan spending, or the sex industry. On the other hand, the difficulty elderly single people face in renting apartments is a real social issue that Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has flagged as well, and securing housing for retirement is an issue that needs to be considered separately from cutting back on drinking and smoking. The article’s case study is a model based on one man who bar-hops in Shimbashi, so it’s worth noting that the figures can’t simply be generalized without accounting for individual differences in spending habits and health.
